A young Coffs Harbour man who once volunteered for the Rural Fire Service wrongfully used two of the emergency service organisation’s cards to fuel up two 4WDs 27 times.

Jak William Mcbean, 19, of Boambee East appeared in Coffs Harbour Local Court on Wednesday.

He pleaded guilty to dishonestly obtaining property by deception after he stung the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) for $3281.60 to fill the four-wheel drives.

The one-time volunteer used two BP fuel cards to fill a Mazda BT50 and a Toyota LandCruiser crew cab, police state in court documents.

The spree of dodgy fill ups occurred from February 11 to April 5.

Mcbean used the cards at service stations at Inverell, Coffs Harbour, Urunga and Ballina – mostly buying diesel and some petrol, the documents state.

Magistrate Aaron Tang observed McBean was still a young man, but advised “you’ve got to put on your big boy pants now”.

Labelling the offending as “disgraceful”, Mr Tang said Mcbean used the cards almost “every single day”.

“There’s a level of planning,” he said.

Mcbean, who has faced the same court before, was convicted and sentenced to a 12-month community correction order with supervision and 50 hours of community service.

He must also pay the RFS back for the fuel.
