The daughter of a well-known Coffs influencer teased for precautions she is forced to take due to medical conditions has found her inner beauty after a TikTok video she made went viral.
Sarah Mills’ daughter Monroe Mills, 11, suffers photo aggravated eczema and solar urticaria.
Basically, she is “allergic” to the sun and exposure causes her to break out in a painful rash.
To combat the condition, Monroe has to wear a special ‘sun suit’ to venture outside.
“She has been ridiculed, even by adults,” social media blogger Ms Mills said.
Ms Mills, who has hundreds of thousands of TikTok followers, said Monroe’s rare medical condition has been physically painful and emotionally tormenting.
“It’s really brutal,” Ms Mills said.
“She’s been in and out of hospital and through the wringer.”
One of Monroe’s escapes has been to wear a pretty dress from Australian company Dollcake, which specialise in making fairytale-like garments for little girls.
Inspired by her mum’s use of social media, Monroe made a TikTok video cheekily asking Dollcake whether the business might consider making her a dream dress named ‘The Monroe’.
“I thought ‘whatever’ – they’re (Dollcake) not going to respond,” Ms Mills said.
“But then hundreds and hundreds of people tagged them (Dollcake) in the post.”
Ms Mills said she still did not think anything would come of it – but she was contacted by Dollcake, asking for her daughter’s measurements.
“Even then I thought they might just send her a dress or a gift of some kind,” she said.
The big surprise came on Monroe’s 11th birthday, when her mum presented a large box sent by Dollcake.
Inside was the special one-off dress, as described by Monroe in her TikTok, and it has been named in her honour.
“It was just so beautiful,” Ms Mills said.
“She puts it on every day and stands in front of the mirror and does some twirls.”
Ms Mills said the family was learning to better manage Monroe’s condition.
She can now venture outside when sunlight is weaker “and autumn and winter are much better than summer”.
“She’s come a long way from people knowing her for something more than just her skin,” Ms Mills said.
Ms Mills said her daughter – who is home schooled – was inspired by the reaction to her TikTok video.
“She feels empowered and dreams of being an influencer with probably far more fans than her mum – and she won’t be as controversial,” Ms Mills said, after rankling some with her at-times edgy posts.
Ms Mills was optimistic about Monroe’s future after she got a much-needed boost.
“Since she was three or four years old she’s always on the lookout for dresses that will make her feel beautiful,” Ms Mills said.
“It’s been amazing.”
