Girls to rule the waves

GIRLS will hit the waves this weekend for the Rip Curl Girls Go Surfing Day at Valla Beach and Nambucca.

AUSTRALIA has kept a firm grasp on the women’s world surfing title in the past decade and Rip Curl is doing its bit to keep it that way.

The surf brand is promoting board riding among young women through its Rip Curl Girls Go Surfing Days at Valla Beach and Nambucca Heads this weekend.

Lessons will be provided by former ASP world tour surfer Trent Munro.

It’s the third consecutive year his Surf Academy at Scotts Head has been involved in the nationwide program.

Rip Curl Girls Go Surfing Days have been held for 21 years, providing an opportunity for young women to take part in professional surf lessons with Surfing Australia instructors in the lead-up to summer.

“Surfing Australia is proud to be involved in such a long running and successful all-girl surfing event which is active, healthy, and fun and appeals to all ages,” Surfing Australia’s sports development manager Chris Symington said.

Reigning world champion and three-time ASP women’s world tour winner Stephanie Gilmore serves as the ambassador of the girls’ surfing days to be held in 60 locations across Australia.

“Rip Curl’s Girls Go Surfing Day is a really positive program, it’s important for raising awareness of female surfing and getting girls in the water,” Stephanie said.

“It’s also a good chance for you to have a fun day at the beach with your mates and to hit the surf in a safe environment.

“Surfing is one of the healthiest, most fun and rewarding ways to keep fit and is also an important part of Australian coastal culture,” she said.
