Tragedy at Park Beach

As treacherous conditions lash the coast a woman was swept out of Coffs Creek and into powerful surf and drowned on Monday afternoon.

The area where the creek meets the ocean is notorious, and was especially dangerous due to king tides and storm surge.

Nearby volunteer lifesavers were able to bring the woman back to the beach and began cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), until NSW Ambulance paramedics and paramedic specialists arrived and took over.

“Despite their best efforts they were unable to revive the 47-year-old,” NSW Ambulance Inspector Joel Casey said.

Busy time for paramedics

New Year’s Eve lived up to its reputation of being one of the busiest nights of the year for NSW Paramedics with several incidents across the Coffs Coast.

In one of the more serious incidents, paramedics were called to reports a man had been glassed at Woolgoolga.

North Coast on high alert with Tropical Cyclone Seth building

Currently over the Coral Sea, the cyclone is forecast to move south over the coming days, bringing with it a barrage of rain, coastal erosion and potentially damaging winds.

A Hazardous Surf Warning has been issued for Coffs and Byron Coasts.

Areas like Ballina, Byron Bay, Tweed Heads, Coffs Harbour and Yamba could also see their highest tide of the years by at least 0.1 metres during the morning’s high tide on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday mornings.

Coffs Harbour Lifeguards have posted a warning about conditions at the North Wall in particular where there have been a number of rescues in recent days posting on Facebook:

“Conditions are dangerous. Unless you are a competent surfer, stay out, drink coffee, watch a movie... Just don‘t go in the water.”
