A court has seen vision of the arrest of a man on the child protection register found to have almost 150 images depicting child abuse.

Daniel Lee Fraser has pleaded guilty to possessing child abuse material and failing to comply with NSW Child Protection Register reporting obligations.

The 49-year-old from Upper Orara had about 147 child abuse images on a digital device, according to court documents.

Police vision from the search conducted at Fraser’s home on the morning of August 14 last year shows one officer looking at Fraser’s laptop and asking “who are these kids?”.

The officer in charge of the investigation gave evidence saying no password was necessary for the investigating officers to access these images as Fraser “was on it (the laptop) at the time”.

Fraser appeared in Coffs Harbour Local Court on Monday to defend a third charge of giving false information when police were trying to access his laptop as part of their ongoing monitoring of his behaviour.

Fraser’s lawyer Tony Cox told the court his client was not aware he was subject to a specific digital evidence access order in relation to the incident and questioned if the hour-long footage of the search played in court showed such an order being handed to Fraser.

After an adjournment the police prosecutor told the court this third charge was to be dismissed.

Magistrate Julia Virgo has ordered a sentencing assessment report and the matter will return to court on July 9 where it is anticipated he will be sentenced.
