Northern NSW’s Indian summer has come to an abrupt end - with coastal areas set to cop steady rain and lower temperatures today.

The rude awakening ahead of the official start of winter is a wake-up call for residents after what has been a mostly dry month of May for the district.

On the Mid North Coast and at Coffs Harbour, nagging showers began on Sunday, and they’ve morphed into a steady fall since last night.

The wet stuff has also been tumbling down as far north as Tweed Heads overnight.

The Bureau of Meteorology reports a high pressure system over the Tasman Sea is slow-moving and maintaining a ridge across the state, while a coastal trough lingers offshore.

There is a “very high” chance of rain, tending to showers, for the Northern Rivers this morning, with the chance of a thunderstorm.

Light winds tending to southerly will see residents reaching for the hoodies and ugg boots.

Lismore and Byron Bay are expected to max out temperature-wise today at 19 degrees, while Grafton and Ballina will hit 20 and Tweed 22.

There is a 90 per cent chain of rain at Coffs Harbour, according to the BOM, though conditions should ease through the day.

Coffs and Port Macquarie are expected to hit a maximum of just 20 degrees.

Showers are expected to hang about the North Coast for much of the week.
