The year 2000 for many evokes memories of Cathy Freeman flying home to win the 400-metre gold medal at the Sydney Olympics - but there were plenty of stars in Coffs Harbour at that time too.

With faces full of hope and brimming with youth, we’ve uncovered a swag of shots from the Coffs Harbour Senior College end of year formal.

The celebration was held at the Coffs Harbour Racing Club, one of the favoured venues for Year 12 formals.

The college, established in 1995, gives students comprehensive educational opportunities in an ambitious, university-like environment.

And if the year 2000 seems almost like yesterday, consider some of the events that took place back then: John Howard was prime minister, the GST was introduced, and NSW suffered its worst flood in 40 years.

It was also the year that Anthony Mundine announced his retirement from rugby league and took to boxing, while Brew saluted at the Melbourne Cup.
