$14.5m community centre plan

COFFS HARBOUR City Council has voted to apply for Regional Development Australia funding for a $14.5 million community space at Brelsford Park.

COFFS HARBOUR City Council has voted to apply for Regional Development Australia funding for a $14.5 million community space at Brelsford Park to include a library and a centre of open learning and business (COLAB).

As well as these two centres, the proposal includes a pedestrian plaza, cafe, youth space and other active and passive recreation areas as well as a car park.

The proposal envisages keeping the main pedestrian plaza across from Park Ave in the current master plan to welcome people into the community space and for the staging of events and using the space between this and the children's adventure playground for the new library, with a co-located cafe and public amenities.

The existing Brelsford Park grandstand would be demolished and replaced with amenities and mixed function facilities.

The project is titled Switching on Coffs in the Heart of the City.

COLAB is a collaboration between industry, educators and government which aims to capitalise on the economic and social opportunities provided by the early rollout of the NBN across the city.

Coffs Harbour is allowed to submit only one proposal for the second round and Mid North Coast RDA will select only three from the region for submission.
