Charges laid after man shot in the face during armed robbery at Wolli Creek

A Chinese student was savagely beaten to death with a weapon in her south Sydney apartment before her boyfriend attempted suicide, police suspect.

Detectives are exploring the theory 19-year-old Liqun Pan – or “Pan Pan” as she was known to her friends - was killed in a horrific murder-suicide attempt.

Ms Pan’s boyfriend, a 20-year-old man also here from China on a student visa, was found with fractures and head injuries on the footpath of Chisholm St, Wolli Creek about 3.30pm on June 27.

He is believed to have fallen from the fourth-floor common area of their modern apartment block and survived. He was rushed to St George Hospital where he remained in an induced coma today.

Once he was formally identified police went to his apartment where Ms Pan’s body was found on June 28.

She had been beaten, it appeared a weapon had been used and there were a number of serious injuries to her upper body.

St George Police Detective Chief Inspector Robert Allison said Ms Pan had been in the country a few years to study at an English language college in the CBD.

“It’s horrific and I really do feel for the family and the distance being so far away makes it even more difficult for them but we are working closely with them,” Ch-Insp Allison said.

“It’s very bizarre and it was very confronting for the police on both days they attended.”

The pair had been dating for more than two years but detectives were keen to speak to her friends to shed light on the recent status of the relationship.

Ch-Insp Allison said the man was lucky to survive fall.

“It’s very remarkable, most people would not have survived that at all. He’s very, very lucky to be alive,” he said.

“If anyone knows Ms Pan and has dealt with her in the days prior to the 27th of June could they please contact Crime Stoppers or St George Police.”

Crime Stoppers can be reached on 1800 333 000.
