Charlotte was the most popular name for baby girls in NSW in 2022 while Oliver was the most popular boy’s name for the eighth year running.

In 2021, Charlotte got pipped by Olivia but regained the lead with Olivia now third.

Millennials have been favouring Charlotte and Oliver for their generation Alpha kids since Generation Alpha began being born in 2010.

In 2022, 83,411 babies were registered in NSW, which was 6648 fewer than in 2021.

The pandemic and rising inflation may have impacted decisions to have a baby but, as parents have 60 days to register their newborn, babies who were born in December 2022 may not be registered as yet.

Attorney-General Mark Speakman revealed the current top 10 NSW baby names for 2022, as recorded by the NSW Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages.

“Welcoming a baby into the family is a joyous time for parents and selecting a name is one of the most important decisions they’ll make. It’s always interesting to see which names are the most popular each year,” Mr Speakman said.

“We welcome the state’s newest residents and congratulate all NSW families who brought a little bundle of joy into their home in 2022.”

Oliver Francisco was born in May 2021.

“He just looked like an Oliver,” mum Danielle Francisco, from Moorebank, said.

“It’s a name we always had on the list but when he was born, he was an Oliver.”

In 2016, Oliver and Olivia were the top baby names, followed by William and Charlotte, Noah and Amelia, and Jack and Ava, and Lucas and Mia.
