Landmark property overlooking Byron’s Main Beach has hit the market, touted as a ‘prime future development site’

The sale would follow a handful of other significant deals within the town, including major pubs and other commercial blocks changing hands for big sums.

Yet another prominent Byron Bay property has hit the market.

2 Jonson Street, home to the Quiksilver shop that overlooks Main Beach, is being marketed by JLL Retail Investments.

Expressions of interest for the 618 sqm site are closing at 4pm on Thursday, July 22.

In their listing, the agency said this was “a truly unique opportunity to acquire one of the most highly sought-after beachfront assets in Australia”.

“(It is) an absolute prime future development site is located at the forefront of the Byron Bay CBD, under 100m from Main Beach and across from the famous Byron Bay Beach Hotel.”

They have flagged the listing as a “landmark opportunity to develop a Byron Bay icon” and an “outstanding opportunity to develop an ultra-luxury hotel, residential and/or entertainment precinct”.

The potential sale would be just one of many major changes for the town.

There has particularly been a buying bonanza along Jonson Street.

On the southern end, the Mercato On Byron shopping centre and the site next door which was formerly home to the Woolworths supermarket changed hands earlier in the year in one massive sale rumoured to have been in the realm of $200 million.

Beside Mercato, the Byron Bay Holiday Village Backpackers, sold for more than $18 million in February and this site is slated to be transformed into a mixed-use development with serviced apartments.

The company of restaurateur Justin Hemmes, has meanwhile bought Cheeky Monkey’s Bar, also on Jonson Street.

That site is expected to reopen as a restaurant and bar later this year.

The beloved Great Northern has also been snapped up in a sale rumoured to have be worth about $80 million.
