Zachery Blaze Allen pleads guilty at Byron Bay Local Court to common assault after punching man in face 15 times

A North Coast man punched a stranger in the face twice and then struck the victim 13 more times after he fell to the concrete in tourism hub Byron Bay. Here’s what we know.

A North Coast man punched a stranger in the face twice and then struck the victim 13 more times after he fell to the concrete.

Both men had been bar-hopping in Byron Bay before the assault which took place outside Byron Bay Hot Bread on Jonson St about 2.30am on August 19, court documents state.

Zachery Blaze Allen, 27, pleaded guilty at Byron Bay Local Court on Monday to assault causing actual bodily harm.

Court documents state Allen and the victim exchanged words and came face-to-face outside the bakery.

“Allen grabbed the victim by his shirt and threw 15 punches to his face,” police facts state.

“By the second punch, the victim had fallen onto the ground, while Allen continually punched him with a closed fist in full swing motions to the face.”

Bystanders separated the men and security from the Great Northern Hotel phoned police.

Officers arrived and were greeted by the victim sporting visual injuries on his face.

“The victim suffered a cut to the bottom on the chin, a bruised left eye and soreness to the jaw,” court document state.

“The left side of the victim’s face was swollen. The victim’s throat was in pain …”

Still, the victim “denied medical attention”, police state.

Allen had downed 12-13 alcoholic drinks between Woody’s Surf Shack nightclub and the Great Northern while the victim had consumed a few drinks, the court was told.

Police found Allen at nearby Railway Park.

He told officers he had been in a fight and punched another man about “six or seven” times in the face.

Police said: “Allen admitted he went over the top in the excessive punches thrown.”

Officers reviewed CCTV and counted the number of strikes, the documents state.

A sentencing assessment report has been ordered and the case is due to return to the court on December 11
