Labourer Jason Brabin caused best friend serious head injury for abandoning him in Byron Bay

In a fit of rage a Victorian labourer attacked his best friend at a popular Byron holiday park – resulting in him being airlifted to hospital with serious head injuries after a night out drinking.

In a fit of rage a Victorian labourer attacked his best friend at Byron’s First Sun Holiday Park – resulting in him being airlifted to hospital with serious head injuries after he claimed his mate had “abandoned him” during a night out drinking.

Jason Brabin fronted Byron Bay Local Court on Monday and pleaded guilty to affray.

Police documents tendered to court state the 39-year-old is from Wodonga, Victoria but was on a working holiday with the victim in Byron Bay, both residing in the holiday park.

The pair went to a Byron Bay premises and became highly intoxicated before the victim left alone and returned to the holiday park while the offender stayed in town about 3.30am on October 15, documents continue.

Brabin became angry with the victim for “abandoning him” with no idea where he was because of his drunken state, police state.

When the offender came back to the holiday park he punched the victim in the head several times and screamed at him.

“You’re a dog mate, you left me in the gutter,” he said. “I’ll f–king stab you, I’ll kill you. You f–king dog.”

The park manager and other campers tried to intervene. When police arrived they found the victim in bed and tried to wake him up but he was unconscious. He was airlifted to Gold Coast University Hospital.

The victim suffered a broken nose with no serious or ongoing head injuries. He refused to make a police statement, stating the offender was his “best friend” and he could not remember the assault.

At Byron Bay police station Brabin acknowledged the victim could have been far more seriously injured and he was remorseful of the harm he caused his friend.

Other campers later told police they were afraid to come out of their accommodation because Brabin sounded “extremely violent”.

Magistrate Karen Stafford said Brabin had no criminal history and strong community ties. She fined the offender $2000 with a conviction recorded.
