A 70-year-old has suffered burns and smoke inhalation after a yacht was found on fire in a marina in Brunswick Heads on Thursday.

Fire and Rescue crews from Brunswick Heads, Tweed Heads, Mullumbimby and Goonellabah arrived at the marina in Harbour Way just after 4pm to find large volumes of black smoke coming from the docked 40-foot vessel.

Firefighters put on protective equipment, personal flotation devices and breathing apparatus, before approaching the fibreglass yacht.

Fearing the boat would sink, firefighters, using multiple lines of hose, were able to get on-board to extinguish the blaze which had spread inside.

A 70-year-old man, suffering shock, burns and smoke inhalation, was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics and later cleared.

Marine Rescue and NSW Police assisted from the water and dock, deploying booms and setting up lighting.

Superintendent Adam Dewberry from Fire and Rescue NSW said this is a timely reminder that calling triple-0 for a fire emergency can be the difference between life and death, or a building or other property being saved or destroyed.
