Home in Mullumbimby “totally destroyed” by fire, emergency services remain at the scene

Firefighters reported finding the home well alight when they arrived at the scene this morning.

Emergency services have attended a house fire in the Byron Shire this morning.

UPDATE 12.30pm:

A home and vehicle have been destroyed in a fire in Mullumbimby.

Inspector Steve Quinlan from the NSW Rural Fire Service said the fire was extinguished earlier this morning but firefighters remain on scene to black out the fire, made more challenging because the structure “collapsed in on itself”.

Insp Quinlan said firefighters were also working to make 45kg gas cylinders located at the home safe.

He said a Fire and Rescue HAZMAT crew attended but there were no hazardous material concerns.

Unfortunately, the home was completely destroyed.

“The structure’s a total loss, and a vehicle,” Insp Quinlan said.

He said some other properties were at risk of exposure to the fire, but were protected.

He said the cause of the fire is not yet known.

EARLIER:

Emergency services remain at the scene of a house fire which has destroyed a Mullumbimby home.

A Fire and Rescue NSW spokesman said they were called to a property on Ann St about 9.30am.

He said three Fire and Rescue crews were at the scene and the Rural Fire Service also has crews in attendance.

“It’s still ongoing, we’ve still got crews on the scene,” he said.

“Crews reported the house was well alight on arrival.”

He said they later reported the home had been “totally destroyed” by the blaze.

He said paramedics and police were also called to the scene and the cause of the blaze would be investigated.

A NSW Ambulance spokesman said there was so far no record of any patient requiring transport to hospital.

“We’ve attended and we’re speaking with (and) assessing a man believed to be in his 70s who’s the owner,” he said.
