The team behind Splendour in the Grass has unveiled plans for a world-first extended reality version of the festival.

Splendour XR will have a completely different line-up to the real-live festival planned for November.

There is no cause for panic for November ticket holders at this stage, although Secret Sounds CEO Jessica Ducrou has told Triple J the spring festival would be dependent on the pandemic situation and progress of the vaccine rollout.

“Back in early March, when we announced the November dates, the government advice pointed to the vaccine rollout being complete by October,” Ms Ducrou said.

“That’s no longer the case. We are still working towards November and considering all options that might work.

“We’ve got six months and it’s probably just a bit early to make a call on that, because we do have some ideas.”

Tickets are on sale now for Splendour XR, an “immersive virtual festival experience” to be held on July 24 and 25.

“Splendour in the Grass is thrilled to introduce Splendour XR, a bold and world first extended reality edition of your favourite Aussie festival,” the event said in a statement.

“It’s online, priced to be affordable and it’s unreal!”

The event will be available on mobile, mobile, tablet, browser, desktop and VR devices.

“Always the innovators, when Covid pulled the plug on live music around the world, team Splendour set to work and is now preparing to flick the switch on a world first online experience, unlike anything you’ve seen to date, that will take Splendour in the Grass to audiences around the globe,” they said.

“Splendour XR combines technology, art and over 50 of your favourite music artists, in a true virtual Splendour in the Grass festival experience rolled out over two days.”

The XR event is a collaboration with San Francisco-based platform developers Sansar.

“Working with Splendour, we have been challenged to go above and beyond anything we’ve done before,” Pouyan Afkary, Business Development representative at Sansar, said.

“ This is going to be the most impressive virtual live event that the consumer market has ever seen, and we can say that with absolute confidence.”

Splendour in the Grass Co-producers Jessica Ducrou and Paul Piticco said in a joint statement they “could not be more excited” about the XR event.

“Splendour has always offered patrons a deep programming experience with The Forum, Global Village, Little Splendour and more on offer alongside our favourite artists,” they said.

“We could not be more excited about Splendour XR and the opportunity to take the Splendour goodness online to our existing community and also to new audiences around the globe.”

Tickets will be from $19.99 per day. Existing Splendour ticket holders get $2.50 off with early bird purchases.

The Splendour XR line-up includes Khalid, The Killers, Chvrches, Denzel Curry, Tash Sultana, Violent Soho, Vera Blue, The Avalanches, Of Monsters and Men and more.
