A two-storey classroom building will be among the features of a major upgrade planned for Bangalow Public School.
A development application for $3.792 million worth of works at the school has been lodged with Byron Shire Council.
The proposal has been placed on public exhibition and residents will be able to have their say until September 30.
A report by School Infrastructure NSW said it is not designed to increase student capacity.
Instead, the changes were designed to “improve the overall amenity and education facilities of the school”.
According to documents lodged with the council, five demountable classrooms and ‘Building D’ would be removed and play equipment would be relocated as part of the proposed changes.
The plans involve the construction of a new two-storey building for classrooms, storage areas and other uses as well as another building to contain toilets, change rooms and cleaning facilities.
New covered walkways, a deck and seating areas have also been included in the plans.
The development application was lodged with the council by planning firm Newton Denny Chapelle in late August.
The school currently has eight permanent buildings, in addition to the demountables which will be removed.
The structure currently used as the administration building is heritage-listed.
The entire school is listed as an “item of heritage significance” under the Byron Local Environmental Plan 2014 and sits within the Bangalow Heritage Conservation Area.
Documents lodged to support the proposed two-storey teaching building said it “has been appropriately developed (and) seeks to minimise impact upon heritage elements and associated setting”.
The school was founded in 1884.
