Community backlash as controversial comedian Isaac Butterfield is scheduled to perform in Byron

Isaac Butterfield’s “no holds bar brand” of humour draws in massive crowds, but his approach was labelled as “hateful” by the Australian Race Discrimination Commissioner.

The Byron Bay community has been shocked to hear controversial comedian Isaac Butterfield will be performing in the region this weekend.

Mr Butterfield is scheduled to present his new show Outlaw at Byron Community Centre on Saturday, drawing ire from the community given his contentious history.

In a now deleted post on the Byron Bay Community Board, a resident questioned the booking of the “far right edgelord” comedian.

However, supporters of Mr Butterfield soon hit back when Mr Butterfield himself reposted the board saying “Hey Byron, Suck a big old fat c***”.

“Great show. It’s not for the faint hearted but for people sick of this PC bull**** and just want to laugh. Jokes are jokes!” one of his fans noted.

Mr Butterfield has previously been the centre of numerous controversies, including a Christchurch massacre joke that was labelled “hurtful and hateful” by the Australian Race Discrimination Commissioner.

In his 2020 stand-up show Anti-Hero, Mr Butterfield poked fun at the 2019 terrorist mosque shootings.

“And for me, the saddest thing about that it wasn‘t the 52 people who were killed. It wasn’t the countless others who had their lives changed forever because their family members were taken from them. It was the hundreds of people that night who couldn’t make it home from nightclubs in Christchurch because all the cabbies were dead,” he joked.

The comments received wide condemnation form the Muslim community and both the NSW and Australian Race Discrimination Commissioner at the time.

“This may have been ‘just a joke’ and I am absolutely supportive of comedy – but everyday racism like this gives permission for hatred and extremism to flourish,” Commissioner Chin Tan told The Feed.

He has also been known to joke about the holocaust, feminism and politics.

In response, a Byron Community Centre spokeswoman said the theatre had been reviewing some policy.

“The not for profit Byron Theatre is a venue for hire and in response to community concerns the management committee is currently reviewing the policy around bookings,” she said.

Mr Butterfield will also perform in Lismore on June 4.
