You know times must be tough when thieves run off with nearly 3000 rolls of toilet paper from a North Coast warehouse – with no pandemic in sight.
Peekapoo owners Sandra-Lea and Andrew Murray said they have been left baffled by the bizarre Bangalow, Byron Shire burglary as Tweed-Byron police work to track down the culprits.
The Aussie business provides toilet paper to luxury ventures including five star hotels Hotel Marvell at Byron Bay and Tingirana at Noosa.
“I’m not sure what the thieves are going to do with almost 3000 rolls of luxury toilet paper,” Ms Murray said.
“Luckily we still have stock at our Coolum (Sunshine Coast) warehouse which we are using to fill the orders of our customers.
“And yes, we have heard every toilet paper pun and joke going since the robbery and you have to admit, a lot of them are funny.
“The truth for us though, is the robbery has been quite a pain in the bum. I hope police are able to get to the bottom of it.”
The sustainable rolls were nicked from Peekapoo’s distribution shed between March 1 and March 3, resulting in some stock issues and disruptions.
Ms Murray said she was not sure how the burglars managed, but “they got through a roller door”.
Ms Murray said “there was no major damage” but the burglary “caused a whole stack of anxiety because it was a lot of stock to lose”.
“As a start up with our product becoming very popular, we have trouble making sure we get our shipments in a timely manner to make sure they’re not on pre-order or sold out,” she said.
The company ordered extra stock during the Christmas period.
“Everything was taken”, Ms Murray said.
“To now be back having very limited stock is annoying. We worked really hard to get there, but now we are back at square one.”
Unfortunately, CCTV was not working at the time, no doubt making the investigation more difficult for police.
“There was other sheds in the area that had been broken into at the same time,” Ms Murray said.
Ms Murray said the business was trying to “roll with the punches”.
“ … it’s just someone now has a bucket load of gorgeous toilet paper they get to wipe their butt with for the rest of their life,” she said.
“It is what it is. If the pandemic taught us anything, it’s that you can never be too prepared when it comes to making sure you have plenty of toilet paper at home or work.”
In 2020, the Covid pandemic resulted in an unusual rush for toilet paper across Australia, which left shelves bare.
Noosa couple the Murrays have two children, Honor and Have and also run business Luxey, which produces and sells reusable glass, stainless steel and silicone cups.
