Covid case numbers are rising daily in Byron Bay and Ballina as the Omicron variant forces business closures and leaves a community in peril.
From up-to-date numbers and vaccination information, here’s everything you need to know about the current outbreak.
Daily case numbers
Northern NSW Local Health District recorded 905 Covid-19 cases overnight on January 14, 2022.
In Byron Shire this meant 247 new cases were recorded and in Ballina Shire this meant 145 new cases.
The remaining cases were 338 in Tweed, 80 in Lismore, 41 in Richmond Valley, 45 in Clarence Valley, eight in Kyogle and one in Tenterfield.
There were 53 Covid-19 positive patients in hospital with six in an intensive care unit.
Two Tweed Heads residents, aged in their 70s, have also died.

Most postcodes in the Byron Bay and Ballina area have a more concerning amount of cases when compared to the rest of the Northern Rivers.

Again, several areas in the Ballina and Byron Bay area drop in vaccination when compared to the rest of the region, notably postcodes 2481, 2482 and 2483.
