A man accused of drink driving after a crash near Lismore left a motorbike rider badly injured burst into tears as he spoke about the collision.

A man accused of drink driving after a crash which left a motorbike rider seriously injured burst into tears as he spoke about the collision outside court.

Alex Edward Burke, 27, faced Lismore Local Court on Monday.

He has been charged with making a U-turn without giving way to a vehicle, drive with low range PCA, negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, dangerous driving and possessing a prohibited drug. No pleas have been entered.

Outside the courthouse, Burke was tearful and said: “If I could do anything to change it, I would.”

He said the crash “turned my world upside down, as well as his”, referring to the motorbike rider, named in court documents as Paul Shipway.

Burke faced the court following the crash involving his Subaru Forester and a Kawasaki motorbike ridden by Mr Shipway, 50, on James St in Dunoon, north of Lismore, on November 3.

Mr Shipway was ejected from his vehicle and members of the public performed CPR until paramedics arrived.

He was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital suffering serious injuries.

Police allege Burke recorded a positive result on a roadside breath test and returned a reading of 0.051 during a follow up alcohol breath analysis at Lismore Police Station.

It’s also alleged Burke was found with cannabis after the crash.

He was taken to Lismore Base Hospital for mandatory blood and urine testing.

Burke has no previous criminal history and “limited” traffic history, according to police documents.

The documents also allege: “There is physical evidence at the scene indicating the accused being at fault for the impact”

The case was adjourned to February 2.
