A 12-year-old boy killed in a car crash outside a school in Sydney’s south has been remembered as a gifted pianist who spent his weekend playing music at aged care homes in the area.

A 12-year-old boy who died in a car crash outside a school in Sydney’s south was a brilliant pianist and mathematical genius well known in the Huntsville Chinese community.

Parents of the gifted youngster, killed when a motorist allegedly skipped a red light and mounted the pavement as the boy walked to Sydney Technical School, are said to be “inconsolable” over the death of their son who lifted their spirits with his zest for life and music.

His housewife mother and taxidriver father ploughed every spare cent they had into funding his passion for piano for which he recently passed Associate Diploma of Performance (AMusA) exam with distinction.

“He was a very special boy, his mother absolutely adored him, every spare dollar she had she used to fund his passion for music, he played piano and violin from his heart,” his music teacher Lily Stu said.

“He is very missed, he was a generous and thoughtful little boy; he gave up his spare time to play piano at aged care homes around Hurstville to entertain residents there at weekends,” Miss Stu, director of Lily Montiverde music school in Hurstville added.

“His parents wanted the best education for him, they are not a rich family but they wanted the best for their boy, “Miss Stu said.

Motorist Rabih Abdulrahman is charged with manslaughter after the 12-year-old was hit by a car and pinned to the ground.

He did not apply for bail and was formally refused at Parramatta Bail Court on Saturday.

The 36-year-old was disqualified from driving when he allegedly drove through a red light, struck and killed the student at Hurstville on Friday morning.

Abdulrahman, slouched beneath a hoodie, did not speak as he faced court via video link.

His lawyer Mohamed Said told the courtroom he would not be applying for bail. He has been charged with manslaughter, dangerous driving occasioning death, driving disqualified and other traffic offences following the boy’s death.

Police will allege the man, who was driving a Corolla, failed to stop and hit the boy as he was crossing the intersection of Lily Street and Forest Road.

“It’s a very tragic incident,” his lawyer Mr Said told media outside court. “Our thoughts go out to the family and everybody that was involved.”

The lawyer said he hadn’t had a chance to speak to his client and could not say whether he would apply for bail in the future.
