Body wrapped in plastic found near Newcastle

A crime scene has been set up near Newcastle after a body wrapped in plastic was found in a creek by a resident who was walking through bushland in the area. The gender of the victim was not yet known.

Mystery surrounds the discovery of a body wrapped in plastic and left in a creek west of Newcastle.

A resident called police just before midday on Saturday after noticing something suspicious near a creek off Wakefield Rd in Teralba, near Lake Macquarie.

When officers arrived they found a body wrapped in plastic and dumped on a creek bed.

Police immediately shut down the rural stretch between Rhondda Rd and The Broadway, connecting the small towns of Killingworth and Barnsley.

The gender of the victim was not known on Saturday night and the remains will undergo a post-mortem examination at the morgue.

Detectives from the Homicide Squad and Lake Macquarie police are leading the investigation.

On Saturday afternoon they doorknocked residents in Barnsley asking for CCTV stretching back several weeks.

The area where the body was found is off an isolated stretch of road with no surrounding homes.

“Where the body is isn’t exactly the best hiding spot,” one local, who asked not to be named, said.

“There is so much more bushland around but it was found fairly close to the road.”
