Two men were critically injured when a car they were travelling in crashed heavily into a power pole early today, with speeding believed to be the cause of the accident.
A Mazda sedan was travelling east on Beaconsfield St in Milperra about 10.15am on Saturday when the driver slammed into a pole.
One of the men, aged 35, was flown to St George Hospital and the other man, 37, was taken by road ambulance to Liverpool Hospital, both suffering multiple injuries.
They are both in a critical condition.
Police said the men had not been able to provide statements on Saturday due to the extent of their injuries.
Investigators said speed was believed to be a factor in the cause of the crash.
“Quite obviously from the pictures that we’ve seen speed is the obvious critical factor in this event,” Chief Insp Phillip Brooks said.
“Speed is certainly a significant issue on our roads, particularly in wet weather.”
The rear of the vehicle was wrapped around the pole and the body was crushed on impact.
The Police Crash Investigation Unit is investigating and Beaconsfield Rd was closed to traffic between Marigold St and Horsley Rd.
Anyone who has information about the crash or has dashcam vision is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
