A man has drowned and another was hospitalised after he was pulled from the water in separate incidents on Christmas Day.

The 25-year-old man who drowned was swimming at Wagga Beach on the Murrumbidgee River in the state’s south west when he failed to resurface at 1pm.

The alarm was raised and NSW State Emergency Service volunteers, NSW ambulance paramedics and members of the NSW Volunteers Rescue Association began a search.

Police said his body was discovered at 2.15pm in the water just near where he was last seen.

In a separate incident at Clovelly Beach, a 29-year-old man was hospitalised after he breathed water into his lungs and nearly drowned while snorkelling at the beach.

Ambulance NSW Inspector Michael Corlis said his friends saw he was in trouble and pulled him to the rocks where lifeguards began first aid before paramedics arrived.

“He was conscious but was having some trouble with his breathing,” he said.

The man was transported to the Prince of Wales in a stable condition, but his health deteriorated because of a “secondary drowning” which occurred because of the water in his lungs.

“He is now in a serious condition at Prince of Wales Hospital but stable,” Mr Corlis said.
