Retailers are slashing prices early ahead of what could be a record-breaking Black Friday as shoppers prepare for a post-lockdown retail bonanza.
The four-day shopping frenzy starting on November 26 and ending on Cyber Monday, November 29, is set to give retailers a $5.4 billion cash boost.
The event could be bigger than Boxing Day, with more Australians planning to shop on Black Friday than Boxing Day, according to research from Finder.
Bargain hunters will be able to snag huge pre-Christmas discounts of up to 75 per cent across categories like clothing, shoes, electronics and whitegoods.
Some retailers are offering early bird discounts, with Myer already slicing 40 per cent off a range of categories, David Jones offering 50 per cent off fashion, shoes, homewares and electrical and $200 off selected Dyson appliances and Amazon offering 50 per cent off selected items.
David Jones, Myer, JBHIFI, Amazon, The Iconic, Bing Lee, Officeworks, Peter Alexander, Glue and Just Jeans are all flagging huge deals for Black Friday but many are remaining tight-lipped on details until the big day.
Myer has promised up to 60 per cent off selected homewares brands and 40-50 per cent off selected men and women’s fashion and The Iconic up to 50 per cent off a range of categories.
Openpay CEO Dion Appel said some of their merchants would be offering discounts of up to 75 per cent.
“We’re expecting Black Friday to really peak this year, it’s almost starting to replace the Boxing Day sales and our partners are planning for this event in a big way. I think a lot of the sales are going to be better than last year,” he said.
Australian Retail Association CEO Paul Zahra said the event would give retailers a huge post-lockdown cash injection.
“For the past two years, November has beaten December as the biggest month for Australian retail sales throughout the year. Black Friday and Cyber Monday can be credited with this trend as people snap up some bargains and shop early for Christmas,” Mr Zahra said.
Roy Morgan CEO Michele Levine said retail sales in November could exceed last year’s records.
“Retail sales for the Black Friday and Cyber Monday four-day shopping period are forecast to drive a surge in retail spending in November as Australians get in early for their Christmas gifts,” Ms Levine said.
It comes as consumers are urged to get their Christmas shopping in early as Covid places pressures on retail supply chains.
“However, consumers are cautioned. With our supply chains under significant pressure, consumers need to be shopping early if they want their products to arrive in time for Christmas,” Mr Zahra said.
Shopper Izzy McDowell, 27, is hoping to score some good deals on Christmas presents on Black Friday.
“I’m really excited to score a bargain,” she said “It’s great to know you’re supporting business too.”
