Bassam Hamzy in prison fight with Alameddine after leaving Supermax

Bassam Hamzy has clashed with a rival Alameddine associate after leaving Goulburn Supermax for the first time in almost a decade.

How did the Hamzy underworld feud begin?

One of the state’s most notorious inmates Bassam Hamzy has been involved in a jail clash with a rival Alameddine associate just days after being moved out of Goulburn Supermax for the first time in almost a decade.

Hamzy, 43, is awaiting a NSW District Court trial for allegedly running a large scale drug ring from inside his jail cell and as a result has been transferred to the Metropolitan Remand and Reception Centre (MRRC) at Silverwater to be closer to the city.

But the Brothers 4 Life founder, who is behind bars until at least 2035, lashed out at Alameddine associate Bilal Mahfoud when the pair crossed paths on Tuesday, The Daily Telegraph can reveal.

In a statement, Corrective Services NSW said it was Hamzy who allegedly “spat” at Mahfoud, 20, as he was being escorted by guards past a phone booth the younger man was using.

“About 8.15am on Tuesday, January 25, a 43-year-old inmate allegedly spat at a 20-year-old inmate at the Metropolitan Remand and Reception Centre at Silverwater,’ a spokeswoman said.

“NSW Police were notified and are investigating the alleged assault.”

Hamzy has long been one of the most high-profile members of Goulburn’s Supermax but his time in the MRRC will be no holiday.

The prison has a specially built pod of the same security level as Supermax for instances such as Hamzy’s, where high profile inmates have court trials in Sydney.

A NSW Correctives Services spokesperson said they “take great care to determine appropriate security classifications and placements for inmates to maintain the safety and security of our prisons”.

Mahfoud first made headlines last November when his parents Guildford home was shot at in an apparent attempt on his life.

Just a few weeks later he was arrested on charges of acquiring a pistol and ammunition while subject to a firearms prohibition order (FPO), leading to him being refused bail and finding himself in the MRRC.

While those involved in the underworld are often reluctant to speak with police, sources said Mahfoud was pushing for charges to be pressed.

In a statement, NSW Police confirmed an investigation into the incident was underway.

“Officers attached to Auburn Police Area Command were notified of the incident and have commenced investigations. Inquiries continue,” a police spokesperson said.
