After surviving his first week as a backbencher, it was with some relief that Mr Joyce and his former media adviser fled Canberra yesterday.
The couple attracted attention — Mr Joyce wearing his trademark Akubra — as they made their way to the Qantas Chairman’s Lounge at Canberra airport.
The flight to Sydney was the first time they had been seen together since news broke they were expecting a baby boy in April, Mr Joyce’s fifth child and first son.
It was the start of a tumultuous month for the new couple, with their relationship splashed across front pages around the country, sparking a feud with Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, who announced a ban on sexual relations between ministers and their staff.
Mr Joyce stood down this week and was replaced by former Veterans Affairs Minister Michael McCormack.
The new leader demoted Damian Drum, who gave Ms Campion a job, from the ministry in a reshuffle but kept all of Mr Joyce’s backers inside Cabinet.
