IT IS a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to pick up a sub-tropical island of your very own, and paradise can't get much cheaper than this.
While most private islands command multi-million dollar price tags that would empty a pirate's treasure chest, Suna Island is in a price-range that even impoverished Robinson Crusoe could afford.
Nestled in the Sandy Strait between The Dimonds, north of Maaroom, and Fraser Island, the 7.8 hectare island is going to auction on Saturday with a reserve between $100,000 and $200,000.
With other freehold islands in Australia selling for more than $6 million – on the rare occasions they are on the market – the tiny isle is looking likely to sell for a song.
Ray White sales agent Glenn Fallon said the island had been put up for sale as part of a deceased estate by vendors from the Sunshine Coast.
“It's been in the family for 20 years, and they used it for fishing and camping,” Mr Fallon said.
“They called it Suna Island, as in ‘sooner or later', but before that, it was called Fisherman's Island.”
With deep water anchorage at the front of the island, Mr Fallon said it could be a water-lover's seventh heaven.
“It's a fantastic fishing and crabbing area, there's plenty of big trees on it, and it's all above the high water mark,” he said.
And its position just off the mainland at The Dimonds, only 20 minutes drive from Maryborough, means it could be the ultimate weekend getaway.
“It's completely disconnected at high tide, and there's no road that leads onto it so it's mostly accessible by boat,” Mr Fallon said.
“It is sometimes accessible by travelling across tidal land at a low tide.”
While the buyer would have to rough it in a tent to start with, the tiny patch of paradise is zoned rural residential so it would be possible to build with council approval.
“It's one of a number of freehold islands in the Sandy Strait, but it's very rare for them to come up for sale,” Mr Fallon said.
Suna Island will go under the hammer on Saturday at 9am, at Ray White Hervey Bay.
