Toby has Norths on his side in cancer struggle

ONE moment 15-year-old Toby Wedrat was playing football for Norths Tigers Junior Rugby Club; the next he was undergoing chemotherapy to stop the spread of his cancer.

The St Edmunds College student - known for his sense of humour and easy-going nature - is battling Hodgkin's lymphoma.

And, as his treatment continues, so does the rising cost of his medical care.

To support Toby and his family, Norths Junior Rugby Club president Norm Scanlan said the club was raising money to help tackle the football player's medical bills.

"He's a great kid and everyone here was shocked and devastated when we heard about his diagnosis," he said.

"No-one could believe that it had happened to him...it goes to show that cancer doesn't discriminate when it comes to age."

This week Toby underwent his second round of chemotherapy.

Mr Scanlan said Toby lived with his grandparents in Ebenezer and was facing a bill of about $20,000 for treatment so far.

He said the club had organised a concert fundraiser, which had seen overwhelming community support.

Mr Scanlan said Toby's team manager Karen McDonald and other club members had spent countless hours organising the event.

"It's a testament to Toby's character to have everyone come together to support him like this," he said.

"What we'd really like to offer is a cure, but since we can't, everyone wants to do what they can to help.

"We want Toby to keep staying positive so that he can fight this illness,"

The event, which will be held at the club at 3pm this Saturday, will feature live entertainment from a collection of local performers, as well as rides and food.

"It's going to be great day out for families to enjoy; it's just a shame that we've had to put it on under such circumstances," Mr Scanlan said.
