SOAP BOX: It's no fun battling traffic on a bike

I'VE begun riding my bike to work and have quickly gained an understanding of how dangerous it can be.

I'VE begun riding my bike to work and have quickly gained an understanding of how dangerous it can be.

I have to say, I'm not impressed with the way some of you people drive.

I'm 183cm tall and weigh close to 90kg, so there's a fair bit of me to be seen.

Yet many of you don't appear to have any idea that I'm there.

Or you don't care.

Firstly, there's those of you who have no idea about the law that says you have to stay a metre away from me when you're passing.

Imagine the feeling of terror, even if it's every 10th car that whizzes by within centimetres of you.

Then there's those of you who simply don't look.

Like the young lady who pulled out in front of me on Maud St last Friday at about 7am.

She missed me by a metre but probably has no idea how close we came to disaster because she was busy checking text messages on her phone.

Then there was the tradie yesterday morning who pulled his loaded ute and trailer out in front of me on Aerodrome Rd.

He saw me at the last minute but it was too late for him to do anything.

Luckily, I was able to avoid hitting him.

So, I'm two-for-two in the last couple of days and am a bit nervous about what this morning will bring.

If you're driving around about seven o'clock any morning, keep an eye out for me - and any other cyclists for that matter.

Most of us are just trying to do the right thing and survive the trip to work.

Do you reckon you could try doing the same?
