Say goodbye to dry June, rain is on its way

Rainfall in June was way below average, but is that about to change?

After a very dry June, there may be some rain on the horizon.
After a very dry June, there may be some rain on the horizon.

The Northern Rivers will receive rain in the next few days, but just how much will we get?

It has been a very dry June, with well below median rainfall, so any rain on the horizon would be welcome.

The Bureau of Meteorology said there was a very high chance of rain across the Northern Rivers today, with the chance of a thunderstorm close to the border in the late morning and afternoon.

Across the region, up to 25mm was forecast for today, up to 45mm on Friday and Saturday, and up to 25mm of rain on Sunday, before the chance of rain eased on Monday.

There was the chance of a thunderstorm in some areas of the Northern Rivers until Saturday.

Only 24mm of rain fell in Lismore in June this year.

The median June rainfall in Lismore was 82.7mm, and last year, the town received 92mm in that month.

On Tuesday, 6.6mm of rain fell, the highest daily total this June.

Ballina only received 52.2mm of rain in June, less than a third of its median rainfall for the month – 161.8mm.

Last year, the town received 139.8mm of rain.

It was a similar trend across the whole region – Byron Bay received 51.2, about a third of its median rainfall; Casino received 21.4, less than half its median: and Tweed Heads received 56.2mm, a little more than half its median.

While totals were low, they were still higher than the record low falls for June, with Lismore receiving no rainfall in 1953, and Ballina receiving just 3.3mm the same year.

A hazardous surf warning has been issued for today for the Byron Coast.
