TAFE NSW has lodged a development application for a new educational facility in Byron Bay.
The organisation lodged a proposal for a Connected Learning Centre at 23 Bayshore Drive on Wednesday.
The proposed facility would involve an estimated $6.13 million construction and would be located on the property also known as Lot 12.
Byron Shire Council owns the 5.8 hectare property, which sits within the Byron Arts and Industry Estate, opposite Byron Bay Fair and next to Habitat.
The council has sought expressions of interest and had already been in negotiations with TAFE NSW for the possible inclusion of a connected learning centre on the site.
A TAFE NSW spokesman said last November the organisation was, at that time, “investigating a number of potential sites” in Byron but they seem to have now honed in on the council-preferred location.
The council has described its “vision for Lot 12” on its website as “a place to learn, collaborate, create and connect to become a place of innovation” which “leads the way locally to inspire global solutions”, “is a catalyst precinct to support local ideas, creativity and initiatives”, “is supported by low carbon and climate resilient infrastructure, technology and systems” and “demonstrates excellence in urban design, governance and delivery models”.
The council’s staff last year recommended support for a proposal for the Lot 12 precinct from The Creative Capital Company, which is associated with Brandon Saul, who is behind the adjacent Habitat development.
