Marine Rescue Ballina has helped a solo sailor in danger of hitting rocks

The alarm was raised by a paddle boarder on the Richmond River before an emergency crew came to the yacht’s aid.

Marine Rescue Ballina has come to the aid of a lone sailor who got into trouble in the Richmond River at Ballina.

A member of the public raised the alarm on Tuesday morning.

“A person on a paddle board on the Richmond River reported a 30-foot yacht with one person on board dragging anchor and in danger of colliding with a rock wall,” Marine Rescue NSW reported.

They responded to the scene with rescue vessel BA 30, to find the yacht grounded on a sandbar and unable to extricate itself.

The Marine Rescue team pulled the yacht off the sandbar and towed it to its mooring.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a hazardous surf warning for much of the NSW coast, including the Byron Coast and Coffs Coast.

The bureau has however cancelled a marine wind warning for the Byron, Coffs and Macquarie Coasts.
