If you woke up today and reached for the woolly socks and a polar fleece jumper, you were not alone – the apparent temperature in Lismore this morning dropped to -1.7 degrees.
Winter has reminded the Northern Rivers that while the days might be sunny, it’s not quite spring yet.
All over town, dog walkers could be seen rugged up in beanies and scarfs, with a few brave souls still bravely wearing shorts.
But the majority of people out and about looked they were ready for a stint at Mawson Base, Antarctica.
Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Hugh McDowell said residents in the 2480 postcode and beyond would need to keep their jumpers and ugg boots handy.
“We have had a cold front go through on Wednesday, so there was a cold air mass over the region from the south and Lismore got down to 1.6 this morning,” he said
“This is due to the hat-trick of cold air, a wind drop off and clear skies, which allowed the heat to radiate off the land and into the atmosphere.”
Mr McDowell said this may not be last huurah for winter in the region.
“It will be cool for the few days with another chilly morning with a minium of around 4 degrees for Lismore,” he said
“The weekend will also have cool mornings then things will warm up into the new week.”
According to BOM, temperatures today are expected to reach 21 for Lismore, Grafton and Tweed, 20 for Ballina and 19 for Ballina.
