"I WISH God would ..."

It's the beginning of a statement that each day captures the attention and thoughts of those travelling into Ipswich Central.

You might have noticed the words yourself, displayed on a blackboard outside the Ipswich Central Church on Limestone St.

You may have even taken the time to stop and offer your own personal wish in chalk.

Senior pastor of the church, Scott Muir said the board had become a popular community space since it was put up in February.

"It's a simple statement, but it's created a great opportunity for people to express their prayers and what they believe," he said.

"Our parish wanted to do something that would start a conversation among people.

"We realised that the fence outside the church would provide the perfect public space for that and transformed it into the blackboard.

Each day, comments scribbled on the board by people range from profoundly thoughtful reflections to personal hopes to light-hearted statements.

"When we had the idea, some worried about the consequences of letting the public write whatever they wanted on the board," Mr Muir said.

"But so far the majority of what people have written has been really good and insightful. I've even used some of the comments as material for my sermons."

Mr Muir said the church would print a new statement for the public to respond to later in the year.
