High hopes heels raise domestic violence awareness

THEY say you have to walk a mile in someone's shoes to know what it is like to be them.

THEY say you have to walk a mile in someone's shoes to know what it is like to be them.

That is what scores of men did this week in the Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event in Ipswich to raise awareness around domestic and family violence and sexual assault.

Ipswich Women's Centre Against Domestic Violence manager Gabrielle Borggaard said the event was "very important in a local context because we need to all be aware that this is happening and we need to know what to do to help women and children seek support and help if we are observing this".

"We are encouraging men to walk in heels to understand what it is like for a woman," she said.

After the march a candle-lit vigil remembered those who have died due to domestic and family violence.

Ipswich Jets star Javarn White said his high heels were "definitely different to a football boot".

"But this is a very important message that we are getting across about domestic violence."
