A Ballina man who begged his mother to let him back into her home then kicked and screamed at police when they came to arrest him has faced court.

Connor Currie, 25, of Cumbalum, appeared at Ballina Local Court via videolink on charges of intentionally stalking and intimidating his mother.

Currie pleaded guilty and was convicted of attempt to stalk or intimidate intend fear of physical or mental harm (DV), contravene prohibition/restriction in apprehended domestic violence order and resist an officer while in execution of duty.

The court heard that Currie, unemployed, knowingly broke a current community corrections order after his mother evicted him for his drug and alcohol consumption, police facts state.

Currie returned to his mother’s house demanding to be ‘let in’ and when he was asked to leave, he attempted to break into the home.

Police were called to the Cumbalum residence around 4.50pm on August 14 and Currie was arrested.

The court heard Currie had been placed in isolation while on remand and that he had not had contact with anyone outside of the centre, including family.

Currie’s lawyer asked that the court might consider a community corrections order for her client.

Magistrate Karen Stafford said the court sees many people who break apprehended violence orders.

“You went to your mother's house to get socks, and wouldn’t leave,” she said.

“You were only one week into the corrections order I gave you.

“You’re not someone sitting at home having a joint watching Netflix. You’re someone who gets behind the wheel of a car and breaks correction orders.

“Sometimes unfortunately, going to jail kickstarts people who put drugs ahead of family. Sometimes jail will dissuade those from associating with the wrong people and get off the drugs. It is a long road.”

Currie was convicted and directed to enter into a 12-month community correction order.

“You must abstain from drugs, and attend rehabilitation,” Ms Stafford said.
