The body of a young man visiting from overseas has been pulled from the water at a popular waterfall and swimming hole near Ballina in northern NSW.
NSW Police have confirmed emergency services were called to Dalwood Falls on Dalwood Rd at Dalwood, close to Alstonville, following reports the man, believed to be 23, jumped into the water and did not resurface on Sunday afternoon.
The falls are notorious for deaths and injuries. Several people have died and others have suffered life-changing impairments in accidents over the years.
An “extensive search” was carried out after the alarm was raised about 2.30pm on Sunday, according to NSW Police.
The man, who was on a working visa and is believed to be a backpacker, was staying on the Gold Coast and was with friends at the time.
His body was uncovered about 2.30pm on Monday.
It took about 24 hours for police, the State Emergency Service, Rural Fire Service and NSW Ambulance to find the man.
“While the body is yet to be formally identified, it is believed to be that of a 23-year-old man,” police said in statement late on Monday afternoon.
It’s understood police have reached out to international agencies to locate the man’s family.
A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
