Ballina Bicycle Club wants to hold races on Hinterland Way and other Ballina roads on Sundays.
The club lodged an application to hold races on Hinterland Way, School Lane and Alcorn Road on nominated Sundays during the second half 2021 and in 2022.
According to council documents, the club is hoping to conduct the events between 7am and 10am.
“These events would take place on The Hinterland Way commencing adjacent to the Macadamia Castle, proceeding north before turning left under the M1 onto Alcorn Road, turning left onto School Lane before turning again onto the Hinterland Way and completing one lap,” the documents stated.
“One lap is approximately 7.5km in length and racing would be graded according to rider’s abilities with lower grades only completing 1-2 laps while higher grades would complete 10 -20 laps.”
Cyclists race in single file or two abreast, except when passing.
The application estimated there could be up to 30 cyclists during these events as other affiliated clubs, such as Byron Bay Cycling Club, Grafton Cycling Club, Murwillumbah Cycling Club and potentially Gold Coast Cycling Club members could compete.
On average it is expected that the number of competitors would be between 10 to 20.
The proposed racing dates were the second Sunday of August, September, October, November and December for 2021.
In 2022, the dates proposed are the second Sunday of February, April, June, August, October and December
The application is similar to the one approved by council’s Local Traffic Committee in 2017 for events in 2018, 2019 and 2020.
The topic will be discussed at council’s Local Traffic Committee meeting on Wednesday, June 9.
