Plans have been released for a new preschool on the southern edge of the Lennox Head CBD - a facility that could cater for up to 39 youngsters Monday to Friday.
The new single-storey preschool is touted for the corner of Hutley Dr and Byron Bay Rd.
The project is expected to cost about $797,500 for construction and landscaping and the applicant is Lennox Head Community Preschool.
The preschool would provide an essential service to the community and is strategically located to provide access to local families, town planner Adrian Zakaras said.
The centre would have two classrooms, to be staffed by the equivalent of six full-time employees. It would operate 8am to 5pm weekdays.
Children attending would be required to be toilet trained – with no nappy changing facilities included in the proposal.
The gross floor area of the preschool building would be 284 square metres.
The outdoor play area would total 404 square metres – the equivalent of seven square metres per child.
Some of the outdoor area would be covered by verandas with the “possibility” for shade sails in the future.
The preschool would have 11 carparking spaces, accessed via both Hutley Dr and Byron Bay Rd.
The new preschool would generate more than 50 vehicle movements per hour in the morning peak when students are being dropped off, Mr Zakaras said.
A new fire shed has also been proposed for the site, with the preschool’s development application including a subdivision to separate the proposed preschool from the Lennox Head Rural Fire station.
The site is currently vacant after the demolition of a house and outbuildings.
