In a Northern Rivers patch of land, the size of the MCG, a crucial lifesaving operation is occurring.

The Bangalow Koalas celebrated an important milestone this week, planting their 100,000th tree on a 2.5ha Bungawalbin property.

The planting represented the culmination of 49 plantings across Northern Rivers 37 properties since 2018, with 80 per cent the trees being been planted following the devastating Black Summer bushfires.

And the 100,00th tree on the Bungawalbin property is just the first step.

President Linda Sparrow hopes to reach 250,000 trees by the end of 2025 to create a Koala Wildlife Corridor across the Northern Rivers.

“If there’s one lesson we’ve learnt it’s that real impact can only happen with collaboration. Individuals, companies, charities, government all working together to protect our beautiful and precious biodiversity,” she said.

The organisation took the occassion to thank the “hundreds of volunteers who turn up to plant trees on both weekdays and Saturday mornings”, the “the tight-knit team at the core of Bangalow Koalas Inc.” and more for their success so far.

“It’s easy to underestimate the amount of work that goes into finding willing landowners, securing funding, preparing the land and planting each tree, one at a time, by hand,” a statement read.

The planting of 4,500 trees at Bungawalbin is stage 1 of 7,450 trees funded by WWF Australia’s Koalas Forever Program with trees funded by One Tree Planted and Forestry NSW.

WWF have entered into a three year funding commitment with Bangalow Koalas Inc. that will help them plant an additional 100,000 trees.
