Baby sperm whale dies after washing up on south coast beach

ORRCA crews believe the whale may have been abandoned by its mother or gotten lost prior to its beaching.

A baby sperm whale has died at just a few weeks old after washing up on the shore of an Illawarra beach.

Specialist ORRCA rescue teams were called to Windang beach around 9.30am on Thursday, after a beachgoer found the calf.

When crews arrived 30 minutes later, they found the whale had sadly died.

Sheets were placed over the young whale to preserve it for necropsy through Taronga Zoo Sydney and NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, to help gain an understanding as to why it beached in Windang.

The young whale was removed from the beach later that afternoon and taken to a waste facility.

ORRCA crews believe the mother may have abandoned the baby whale, or it got lost prior to beaching.
