Baby faced gunmen are taking up murder contracts for less than $20,000, with first-choice hitmen steering clear amid growing fears the police are on top in Sydney’s gang war.

A number of the 16 assassinations that have occurred on the city’s streets since late-2020 have been dubbed “million dollar murders”, with widespread talk about the high-price put on offer to take out some of the underworld’s biggest names.

But underworld sources said while big money was still on offer for experienced hitmen, younger crooks were accepting minimal amounts in a bid to prove themselves.

“The word is that some of these kids, particularly from the Islander gangs, are taking only $10,000, $15,000 or $20,000 for the hits,” one source said.

“It’s just crazy, but it tells you how desperate they are for cash and how little regard there is for life right now on the streets.”

The headline-making war between clans including the Hamzys, and their rivals the Alameddines and Comanchero, has seen a disregard for the rules gangsters once prided themselves on.

In November last year the late Murat Gulasi was shot a number of times outside a Prospect gym, but a number of bullets missed and came within centimetres of hitting children at a neighbouring daycare centre.

In August, two women - Lametta Fadlallah and Amy Hazzouri - were shot dead, with both incidents breaking the long-held convention of leaving women and children out of any conflict.

“When you’re paying that (lesser) money you’re not getting the best guys, they are just kids who have no experience,” the underworld source said.

The small amounts put on offer for involvement in underworld hits was outlined in court last week at a hearing for two men allegedly involved in the assassination of Mahmoud “Brownie” Ahmad.

Jason Laria, who is charged with accessory after the fact to murder, allegedly received $2000 for his involvement in the preparation of getaway cars for the gunmen.

As part of an unsuccessful application for bail this week, his lawyers told a court the case against him was weak, and that there was little evidence of his knowledge of the alleged murder.

“I’d be very surprised if the millions that’s talked about is actually true,” a police source said.
