If your Christmas wish is escaping the rat race, the mortgage or even the family, this may be the gift for you.
The first Australian tiny homes have gone on sale on Amazon Australia starting at $59,990 for a basic build up to $89,990 for a luxe 25.5sq m four-person sleeper — including free shipping.
While higher than the average Christmas gift spend, the long-term savings could include a future bill-free if buyers opt for composting toilets, tank water and solar system.
Designed and built by Aussie Tiny Houses, operations manager Thiago Perrone said they were the first Australian tiny homes to hit Amazon, as a growing number of 30-50 year olds sought to opt out of traditional mortgages and downsize.
“It’s affordability, it’s minimum footprint, they can live off the grid and depending on the council they don’t need to go through council approval. so they can put it on a block of land and live in it,” Mr Perrone said.
“You can live completely off the grid, you can have a composting toilet, a solar system, lane? water, you’re self sufficient
Aussie Tiny Houses are classified as caravans, so they have a maximum width of 2.5m, height of 4.3m, an 11m length and 4.5 tonne weight.
Caravans do not require DA approvals from councils, but councils can limit the amount of time someone can permanently live in one, Mr Perrone said.
While it was a challenge to downsize, he said most people managed to adapt quickly and enjoyed living with less stuff.
“You can get pretty good storage and pretty good size kitchens, but for example, you don’t need three coffee cups, you need two, so you need to downsize pretty well.”
“That’s the biggest challenge for people moving into a tiny house.”
Amazon Australia is giving away a Tiny Holiday House and Sydneysiders can check out the house in Sydney’s Martin Place from until 7pm today.
