Arctic winds to bring cold snap for Sydney

Arctic winds will sweep across New South Wales bringing a metre of snow, severe weather warnings and frosty temperatures. The cold front is expected to hit Sydney on Thursday night bringing strong winds and five degree drop in temperature.

Wild weather systems from Western Australia and the Bass Strait will combine before moving over NSW on Thursday with heavy snowfall, damaging gale-force winds and freezing temperatures expected.

It will be a dramatic change of pace for Sydneysiders who have been enjoying top temperatures of 22 degrees.

The cold front is expected to hit Sydney on Thursday night bringing strong winds and five degree drop in temperature.

Sydney Airport is expected to cop the worst of the gusts with wind speeds of 35km/h expected on Friday morning.

CBD residents will wake up to a chilly morning on Friday with eight degrees expected, while the mercury could get as low as five degrees in Camden and Campbelltown.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Bimal KC said we are expecting blizzard-like conditions at the ski fields.

“The series of cold fronts will bring a stream of very cold air and will drop the temperatures in our upper atmosphere,” he said.

“That will bring the snow level down — resulting in a lot of snowfall along the alps and the alpine area.

“We are expecting around a metre of snow along with strong, cold winds.”

A severe weather warning has been issued for parts of the Central Tablelands and southern parts of the ranges.

Damaging conditions are expected in alpine areas, on the South Coast and the Illawarra.

Friday, Saturday and Sunday are expected to cop the worst of the weather, with smaller cold fronts moving in early next week to keep the temperatures low.
