The family of a teenager who was struck by a bus and killed in front of his schoolmates near Newcastle say they will “never stop” loving him.

Akkeah Davies-Adam said she would miss him, “You changed (our) lives and we are so happy that we could speak It with you we will always have you in (our) hearts fly high.”

Brennan’s cousin Melissa O’Donnell said she was shocked by the tragedy. “RIP my little cuz Brennan Nean, can’t believe you have gone,” she wrote. “So young to be taken.”

Emergency crews arrived to a “confronting scene” with reports Brennan’s school friends witnessed the incident.

“Unfortunately despite the best efforts of paramedics the patient could not be saved,” NSW Ambulance Inspector Matt Hawke said.

“The school bus was full of schoolchildren on its way to school and the driver was conveyed to hospital for assessment.”

Resident Peter McMahon, who lives a couple of streets away, said the incident came as a shock to locals in the area.

“There’s a lot of nice young kids around here, particularly going to the high school. It’s shaken everyone.

“You get a lot of kids going to school — some walking, some getting on and off buses — and at that hour of the morning it’s bumper to bumper.”

A NSW Department of Education spokesman confirmed Brennan was a student at Irrawang High School.

“The school has extended its sincere condolences to the family and many friends of the student,” he said.

“Counselling support is in place at the school and other local schools for students and staff who may have witnessed or been affected by the incident.

“The school has extended its appreciation for the care and compassion of its parents and the broader school community at this very challenging time.”
