A HEARTFELT appeal by The Saturday Telegraph’s fashion editor Elle Halliwell yesterday to boost funds for vital cancer research has helped to raise $2.6 million across the state.
Halliwell received an outpouring of support after she revealed she was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukaemia just 48 hours before finding out she was pregnant.
One of those offering support to Halliwell yesterday was Shelley Bell, 39, who was also diagnosed with the rare cancer while pregnant with daughter Amelie, who is now a healthy eight-year-old.
The Perth mum commenced treatment during her pregnancy and continues to take medication.
Cancer Council CEO Jim L’Estrange thanked Halliwell for sharing her story on Daffodil Day yesterday: “It’s thanks to inspiring stories and tributes shared today that the NSW community has been encouraged to get out there and donate on this national day of hope.”
Leukaemia Foundation general manager Chris McMillan said Halliwell was “incredibly brave” to share her story publicly and had “helped others to feel less isolated”.
