Eveleigh: Police car and motorbike collide as cops respond to job under lights and sirens

An unmarked police car responding to a job under lights and sirens is now the subject of an independent investigation after colliding with a motorbike in Sydney’s inner-city.

The circumstances surrounding a serious collision between an unmarked police car and a motorcyclist are under investigation, after the rider suffered significant head injuries.

Just after 7.30am on Saturday, police drove down Henderson Rd in Eveleigh under lights and sirens, with witnesses saying several vehicles may have been following another vehicle.

CCTV captured the moment police rushed down the road, before a teenager was arrested on Explorer St. There are reports a Mercedes had been dumped on nearby Rowley Lane.

The footage then captures a motorcyclist riding down the bike lane on the opposite side of Henderson Rd, and flying over a speed hump — just seconds before it heavily collides with an unmarked police car.

A witness said the rider “flew” off his bike, falling heavily onto the road.

He suffered serious head injuries and was rushed to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.

“Officers attached to South Sydney Police Area Command were responding to a job when a collision occurred between a police vehicle and a trail bike near the intersection of Henderson and Mitchell roads, Eveleigh,” police said in a statement.

Henderson Rd was closed off for most of Saturday after the crash was declared a critical incident and investigators were called in to assess the carnage.

“A team from Sydney City Police Area Command is now investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash,” police said.

“That investigation will be subject to an independent review.”

Police marked several items as evidence, including a shoe, the rider’s helmet and clothes that had been strewn across the road.

It has not been suggested whether the motorcyclist was at all linked to the arrest moments prior. With the incident under investigation, police have remained tight-lipped on details surrounding the horror crash.

One witness said while they didn’t see the collision, they heard a “huge bang” and screeching tyres, followed by yelling.

“The helicopters had been flying around all morning, it was like they were looking for someone, and then you just heard this huge bang,” he said.

It is understood the motorbike rider needed major surgery for head injuries after he was taken to hospital.
