The cousin of a man who supplied the gun used to kill police accountant Curtis Cheng has been sentenced to more than two years behind bars after he was caught with a loaded gun in his underpants.

Ahmad Alameddine appeared in the dock of Downing Centre District Court on Tuesday after pleading guilty to possessing an unauthorised pistol over the incident on August 22 last year.

The court was told the 29-year-old was a passenger in a Chrysler sedan which ran a red light when he was pulled over by police in the affluent suburb of Edgecliff on the weekday afternoon.

Officers conducted a search, finding ice and a glass pipe on him before he became agitated and asked if he could be searched in the privacy of a police van.

The van later arrived and when he was searched the black pistol concealed within his “skin compression tights” dropped to the floor.

The weapon was a .32 calibre Beretta self-loading pistol and its magazine was loaded with six cartridges.

A test fire later found it to be in working condition.

The court heard Alameddine had the gun because he planned on demanding money from people to resolve a financial dispute but that he never planned to use it.

“He was essentially trying what he thought was the right thing to do — to get the money back that was owed to his friends,” defence barrister Fahim Kahn told the court.

Judge Nicole Noman said it was concerning he had a gun in his possession given he said he was later was feeling “paranoid” at the time.

“He has a pistol that is loaded that has six cartridges on it in the gun in circumstances where he’s in the car with another person and he’s not just innocently driving around … he’s actually advancing why he possessed it,” she said.

In sentencing, Judge Noman found Alameddine’s prospects of rehabilitation were low and that “clearly the risk of having loaded firearms in the community is something that calls for general deterrence”.

The court was told Alameddine had an abusive childhood and had been charged while in jail for using drugs behind bars.

He was sentenced to two and a half years in prison and will be eligible for parole in August 2021 with time already served.

Alameddine’s cousin, Talal Alameddine, was sentenced to 13 years jail last year after he supplied a revolver to Raban Alou, which was later used by teen Farhad Jabar, 15, to fatally shoot Mr Cheng outside Parramatta police headquarters in 2015.
